O'Neil was a student in high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. But she lost badly in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned at this, and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa with most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she was never in the bottom three once ever again. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil advanced to the final two in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner.
